During its integration with Orange under the Masorange umbrella, MásMóvil has reached a key milestone becoming the third-largest mobile operator in Spain, surpassing Vodafone in market share. According to June data released by Spain’s competition authority CNMC, the gap among the second, third, and fourth-largest operators is razor-thin, with just 0.33 percentage points separating Orange, MásMóvil, and Vodafone.
Although Orange and MásMóvil now operate jointly as Masorange, the CNMC continues to report their figures separately, allowing a closer look at each brand’s post-merger performance. In June, MásMóvil captured a 21.33% share of the mobile market, slightly up from 21.29% in May and 0.31 points higher than the same period last year.
Meanwhile, Vodafone’s share slipped to 21.22%, down from 21.31% in May. A year ago, under its previous ownership, Vodafone held a 21.7% market share, highlighting a gradual erosion in its position. The company is now controlled by UK-based Zegona.
A Fierce Battle at the Top
Competition in the Spanish mobile sector has become more intense than ever. In June 2024, Orange led with a 21.55% share, just 0.33 points ahead of Vodafone. This marks a reversal from November 2023, when Vodafone temporarily climbed to second place with a 22% share. It was the first time ahead of Orange in eight years. That lead, however, was short-lived.
Telefónica remains the official market leader with a 26.77% share as of June, though that represents a year-on-year decline of 0.67 points. If Orange and MásMóvil’s shares were combined, the newly formed Masorange group would dominate the market with a 42.88% share over 16 points ahead of Telefónica.
While the major players are losing ground, Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs), particularly Digi, continue to grow. In June, these smaller carriers reached a 9.13% market share, up 1.41 points from the previous year.
Broadband Market: Stable but Shifting
The fixed broadband market has seen less dramatic shifts. MásMóvil has held third place since acquiring Euskaltel in May 2022. In June, its broadband market share was 18.82%, a slight dip from 18.85% in May and 18.9% in June 2023.
Vodafone continues to lose ground here as well. Its share dropped to 15.99% in June, compared to 16% the month before and 17.19% a year ago. Orange, which secured the second spot after acquiring Jazztel in 2015, maintained a 22.18% share in June a marginal decline compared to previous periods.
Telefónica remains the leader in fixed broadband with a 33.56% share. However, the combined strength of Orange and MásMóvil would give Masorange a commanding 41% of the market well ahead of Telefónica’s Movistar.
Smaller operators categorized as “Others”, again led by Digi have also gained traction in the broadband segment, reaching a 9.45% share in June. That’s nearly 3 points higher than a year earlier.
