Mamma Mia, SOM Produce’s production has surpassed 500,000 viewers

Over 500,000 people have already enjoyed the Mamma Mia! spectacle at the Rialto Theater in Madrid, an extraordinary milestone for the production. Set on a Greek island, the show offers a vibrant theatrical experience, set to the iconic hits of ABBA.

With 23 songs, including Dancing Queen, Voulez Vous, and Gimme Gimme Gimme, this musical comedy celebrates the bonds between mothers and daughters, love, and friendships from the past. The lead role of Donna is portrayed by Verónica Ronda, joined by Mariola Peña (Tanya) and Inés León (Rosie), making up a talented ensemble of 27 performers who sing, and act live on stage.

The story revolves around Donna, a single mother who runs a hotel on a Greek island. Her daughter, Sophie, is about to get married and, after discovering her mother’s diary, uncovers three potential fathers. Sophie secretly invites them to the wedding in hopes that one will walk her down the aisle, setting off a series of unexpected and emotional reunions.

In its second season, the musical introduced variations from the original version. Verónica Ronda shared her insights into her character and the show in an interview with RTVE.es.

On Playing Donna:

Ronda described her surprise at being cast in this role, highlighting the show’s scenic richness and choreographic complexity, as well as the opportunity to collaborate with highly skilled professionals. For her, playing Donna allows her to explore different forms of love romantic, fraternal, and maternal while also connecting to her own personal experiences.

Themes Beyond Love and Friendship:

Ronda emphasizes the emotional and nostalgic depth of the musical, which, though comedic, delves into the characters’ personal evolution, the passage of time, and the necessity of confronting adulthood.

Why It Continues to Be a Success:

For Ronda, the key to Mamma Mia!’s enduring success lies in ABBA’s songs. They are simple yet have a timeless appeal, resonating with audiences of all ages. The music unites different generations, making the show a shared experience for both the young and the elderly.

Audience Response:

From the stage, Ronda notices how the audience transforms throughout the performance: they laugh during the comedy, get moved during the drama, and finally, during the finale, the show almost becomes a concert, with the audience singing, jumping, and clapping in unison a magical moment for the entire cast.

Physical and Vocal Commitment:

The physical demands of the role are high. With eight performances a week, discipline, rest, healthy eating, daily exercise, and strong team spirit are crucial. According to Ronda, camaraderie within the cast is key to maintaining energy and motivation.

Interpretation in Musicals:

Ronda highlights that Mamma Mia! doesn’t neglect the acting aspect, something that can sometimes be overlooked in other musicals. Thanks to the direction of Juan Carlos Fisher, the actors had room to explore and deepen their characters, enriching the theatrical experience.

Visual and Choreographic Renewal:

The set design, by Ricardo Sánchez-Cuerda, presents a book-like opening with each scene. The choreography, led by Iker Carrera, introduces a more contemporary and dynamic style. The costumes, designed by Gabriela Salaverri, move away from the classic vibrant colors, opting for metallic and elegant tones, with more than 6,000 hand-sewn crystals in each of the Dynamos’ outfits.

Ronda’s Favorite Songs:

Ronda mentions Super Trouper as one of her favorites for its energy and the bond she shares with her onstage companions. She also highlights Slipping Through My Fingers, a deeply emotional ballad that Donna sings to her daughter as she helps her prepare for the wedding one of the most touching moments in the show.
